This issue continues to provide our readers with a balance of performance improvement information and practical business philosophy. HPS is very pleased to introduce Melinda K. Figeley, SPHR, who joined our firm this past summer and authors "Human Resources at the Crossroads."

HPS colleague Dr. Edmond Bazerghi reminds us that valuing differences in addition to commonality produces synergy, increased collaboration, and higher productivity among our teams and organizations.

Finally, and as a reminder, next month we will begin featuring a series of articles on Business Process Improvement (Six-Sigma) written by subject expert and HPS colleague, Morris Williamson.

HPS works with leaders who want to perform at their best and inspire the best from their people. We are passionate about helping leaders and the teams and organizations they lead to achieve their highest performance potential.

HPS Leadership Best Practices™ e-zine is published monthly as a free information resource for senior leaders who seek practical and cost-effective business solutions. We appreciate your ongoing feedback and comments regarding the value of this publication.

I welcome your comments, suggestions for improvement, and requests for new topics at any time. Please contact me directly at

Until next month and kindest regards,

Larry Fehd, President and Founder

Human Resources at the Crossroads
Human Performance Strategies' work with CEOs, presidents, and other key company leaders is foremost a process of discovery. It involves a process of assessing organizational effectiveness by examining the strengths, threats, and opportunities faced by the company as a whole. However, it also includes a comprehensive and candid assessment of the effectiveness of each functional area of the company, such as operations, finance, customer service, marketing, sales, and human resources.

With respect to the human resources function, we hear a remarkably similar set of concerns from senior leaders, regardless of industry or of company size. These concerns tend to fall into four distinct categories. [more]

Leveraging Diversity
On June 23, 2003, a Supreme Court decision affirmed the use of race as a factor in college admissions. On the same day, President Bush issued a statement praising the court "for recognizing the value of diversity on our nation's campuses."

"Diversity" in the context of this ruling applies primarily to race, gender, and ethnicity and is based on the rights "common" to all citizens under the law, regardless of their racial, ethnic, religious, or cultural differences; but this approach does not do justice to the notion of "diversity," which has a much richer meaning.
