Welcome to the premier issue of HPS Leadership Best Practices™

The theme of this issue is New Year SOLUTIONS.

This issue also provides an introduction to Human Performance Strategies. We work with leaders who want to perform at their best and inspire the best from their people. Our only mission is to help you improve productivity, competitive advantage, and bottom-line business results. We invite you to peruse the topic links to the right to learn more about current leadership best practices and how to improve individual, team, and organizational performance.

Future issues will feature articles written by HPS staff and other experts on a variety of challenges facing today's business leaders. These articles will be concise and informative while offering practical and cost-effective solutions. We hope you will find this information to be of value as you discover new SOLUTIONS to help you develop exemplary leaders and strive for world-class levels of individual, team, and organizational performance.

New Year "SOLUTIONS"

OK, let's admit it. Most of us at least think about and perhaps even commit to a few New Year's resolutions, right? How many of these resolutions actually result in any sustained change? According to experts, for most of us these well-intended resolutions soon become faint memories as the weeks and months of the New Year ensue. Unfortunately, as these resolutions lose momentum, they can quickly lead to disappointment and a sense of failure.

Most New Year's resolutions are about things we want to stop doing. Focusing on stopping a particular behavior will not lead to sustained change. Do you know why? It's because resolutions have a built-in failure mechanism which focuses our attention toward the "not doing" rather than the desired results. Rather than focusing your energy on stopping, how about redirecting your energy on starting. You will likely achieve very different and much better results.

Why do so many productivity and business improvement initiatives so often resemble failed New Year's resolutions or in best case scenarios evolve into flavors-of-the-month? Could it be that our focus is on the stop versus start? The answer will likely require a paradigm shift and a laser-like focus on results-oriented SOLUTIONS. It will also likely require letting go of some old behaviors and habits which are typically more reactive than proactive in nature.

What do you want to accomplish in the New Year? What SOLUTIONS might you be seeking by stopping versus starting? As Stephen Covey suggested in his best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, "Begin with the End in Mind." Also, start reframing those resolutions into SOLUTIONS with clear, results-oriented goals and objectives.

Until next month and kindest regards,
